Tips to Survive Your First Spartan Race

The Reebok Spartan Race is an event held all over the world.  It consists of running distances of 3, 8, or 12 mile courses with obstacles, water and mud.  People from all over the globe travel to these events to test their strength, stamina and mental toughness.

If you are training to do your first Spartan race here are a few tips that might make the run more enjoyable.

1. Shoes

Make sure you have proper footwear.  You will be traversing through thick, sticky, stony mud.  It will get into your shoes.  Some people wrap their shoes in duct tape or other athletic tape.  I have found this method to be more of a hindrance than a help.  Within 30 minutes the tape begins to lose its stickiness and starts to unravel from your shoes.  Don’t wear cleats or any type of boots.

2. Pre-Race Fueling

In my experience, eating within 2 hours of the race is an ideal window.  Some foods work better for one person, but not the other.  I have found success with eggs and breakfast meats,  sandwiches, and even pancakes.  You will be burning a lot of calories.  Eat up!

3. Clothing

I wear a Reebok bathing suit, and a moisture wick top.  This set up dries quickly, keeps me cool and offers support for my unmentionables.  I also use compression socks to help with my shins and calf support.

4. Camelback or other hydration system

Having water on hand is a good idea, and Camelback offers a quality product that can be very useful on your trek through Spartan’s course.  Staying hydrated is crucial, and many packs come with pouches that will allow you to store some protein gels for the race as well.

5. Run

Running is horrible.  I’m not a fan f it at all.  However, it is an essential element to surviving your first race.  You will be doing a fair amount of running, this will help you build endurance.  There are great apps out there for free that will help you become a better runner.

6. Pull ups

You will need to have upper body strength for many obstacles in Spartan.  Pull ups will be a tremendous exercise to help you conquer this race.  Don’t neglect your pull ups

7. Squats

Another key to succeeding at Spartan is to have strong legs.  Mixing running with pull ups, and squats will go a long way when your trudging up a mountain.  Don’t neglect your legs!
